How to Transfer a Website from Weebly to Squarespace (Part 2)
Hey everyone! This is Part TWO of transferring your Weebly website to Squarespace. In this tutorial, we'll cover transferring your domain (the URL that you own, aka www.iownthisdomain.com) over from Weebly to an outside hosting site like Bluehost, and then transferring that same domain from Blue Host over to Squarespace!
If you haven't taken a look at Part 1 of this tutorial yet, go ahead and take a look right over here so we're all on the same page.
Note: I've used the example of transferring one of my own websites, So You Think You Can France, over to Squarespace - so this is all tried-and-true!
Keep in mind that when transferring domains away from and over to different platforms, there will sometimes be a delay of a few days depending on each platform's policy. Don't let this deter you! The only thing I would suggest is to begin your transfer process earlier than you want to launch your new Squarespace site just so you're not stuck sitting, wishing, waiting...
Here we go!
Transferring a Website from Weebly to Squarespace (Part 2)
So, in Part 1, we ended the tutorial on building out the entire new Squarespace site using the 2-week free trial, uploading all pages and blog posts, etc. Now we're going to get into the nitty gritty, technical domain-transfer stuff. Don't worry, it's not as scary as it seems! Just make sure to follow directions carefully and to not rush through the process because there are little mistakes that might result in you being restricted from moving your domain for up to 60 days. Ouch!
1. Transfer your domain AWAY from Weebly.
First things first, you're going to want to let Weebly know that you need to transfer your domain away from their platform. This is all very straightforward - just go into your admin panel on Weebly and select "Domain" from the upper left-hand corner.
From there, you'll head to the section that's called "Registrar Lock" and you'll select 'Disable.' Once you've selected 'Disable,' your Authorization code will be revealed. Save this code in a save place, write it down - just keep it handy because it's the key ingredient to a successful transfer!
2. Transfer your domain from Weebly to a third-pary domain host (I chose Bluehost).
Unfortunately, we can't yet transfer the domain right from Weebly to Squarespace so this is why we must add in this extra step of the (temporary) third-party domain host.
So, go ahead and sign up for Bluehost, head over to the left-hand side panel and select 'Domains.' Then select 'Transfer a New Domain to Your Account.'
From here, you will be prompted to enter your website domain. Go ahead and enter your domain into the box and select 'Continue.' From there, you'll be prompted to enter your Authorization code (EPP Authorization Code).
Once that's all locked in, you'll read a message that lets you know that you must wait for the losing registrar (Weebly) to release your domain to the gaining registrar (Bluehost). You'll also be receiving lots of email verification emails so keep on the look-out for those to ensure smooth transitioning! Depending on Weebly and your account, this can take up to a week - so be aware of that and plan accordingly!
Once your domain has been transferred from Weebly to Bluehost, you can start the process from Bluehost to Squarespace!
3. Update all contact information CORRECTLY.
To do this, head back into your Bluehost account and select 'Domains' and choose your domain you'll be dealing with this. An important note that I came across was that if you're making any changes or updates to your contact information, to check the ADMIN box while doing so (and not just REGISTRANT) because leaving the ADMIN box unchecked may result in a 60-day domain lock due to security reasons.
Look out for any verification emails to "sign off on" (aka just clicking the "Verify" button in your inbox once you receive the email).
4. Start the migration from Bluehost to Squarespace
Once your information has been correctly updated, let's begin the process to switch from Bluehost to Squarespace. In my opinion, it's a lot easier than transferring the domain away from Weebly - so if you've made it this far, congrats because it's smooth sailin' from here on out!
First things first, we want to be head to the Privacy tab in our domain information and PAUSE the privacy. This will allow you to grab the codes and put them over onto Squarespace.
Then, once you've paused your privacy, you'll want to UNLOCK your domain by then navigating to the "Lock" tab and selected "Unlock your domain."
After this, you'll be allowed to note down (or just copy to be pasted later) your EPP code by navigating to the "Transfer EPP" tab.
5. Enter Squarespace.
Now, we've made it over to Squarespace (the home stretch!).
(I'm assuming you've already signed up an account on Squarespace, so if you haven't - go ahead and do that and catch us back here to continue with the process!)
From your account screen where it shows a desktop of your websites, selected 'Domains' at the top, next to 'Websites.'
When prompted, select the text "Already have a domain?"
From there, enter your domain exactly as it is (careful with typos!)
When asked if you'd like to use this domain for an existing site, select "Yes, choose which site." And choose your site.
From here, you'll be prompted to prepare your domain for transfer. Now, assuming we've done all of the previous steps correctly, most of these tasks will have green circles with checkmarks in them. In the off change that we forgot something, Squarespace will let you know.
Now, all you have to do is to input your EPP authorization code and proceed! You'll receive an important email verification that you'll need to verify, but that's it!
Note: the domain transfer TO Squarespace may sometimes take up to 7 days, so if this happens, just put up a nice "Coming Soon" cover page on your site and start building up anticipation for your new Squarespace launch!
Thanks for reading, everyone! I hope this helped you transfer your website and domain from Weebly to Squarespace!
